Best interiors shops in SW8 and SW11

When it comes to finding stylish home décor, Cathy Phillips knows all the hidden homeware treasure spots in London. Here she shares her pick of the best places to shop in Battersea.

Battersea, that large and prosperous area in South West London, is as rich in interior design shops as it is in cafés and funky bars. Step away from the chain shops and poke around a little, and you can find some excellent independent shops and trade suppliers that you may not be familiar with even if you live in SW11 or SW8.

Glowing velvets, chill-out furniture from Loaf in one of our interior design projects

Let’s start on Queenstown Road

I know this road well because my studio is here. (Do pop in for a mint tea!). First, there’s Loaf – a small chain specialising in sofas and beds. Their furniture is supremely comfortable and many of the fabrics come in wonderful, glowing colours, as well as neutrals. If you are looking for a new sofa, I highly recommend a trip here. The sign on the door always makes me smile.

Further down, take a detour down the unpromising-looking Silverstone Road and you will discover Worlds End Tilesthey have a fantastic range of plain and patterned tiles. Do go if you are planning a new bathroom, or any floor in your house. Or a kitchen… talking of which if you are planning a new kitchen, pay a visit to Howdens, further down the road, for great quality kitchens at very good prices – this is because they are a trade-only business. I use Howdens often.

Back on Queenstown Road meander down a little further and you will find Domus for more tiles, Bowloom for flooring, especially rugs and stair runners; and Decara for lovely accessories such as tableware, mirrors and lighting.

After lunch, or coffee, you can hit Battersea Park Road for Circa (wonderful 20th century antiques – the reupholstered chairs are particularly good finds) and, for something more modern, W E Interiors which stocks brands such as Another Brand, simple modern furniture that is a cut above the out-of-town-megastore stuff.

A little further away, but worth a mention; Bo Concept on York Road. Now this is a chain, but a very useful and upmarket one. This is where I go if I want well-designed, stylish Scandinavian designer furniture at high street prices. And they nominated me as ‘One to Watch” in 2015, so of course I love them.

For reclaimed furniture (and enormous garden objects, and door knobs and all sorts of wonderful things), take a detour in the other direction to LASSCO in Vauxhall. If you are fan of this sort of stuff, you will not leave empty handed.
