Want to know where to pick up amazing things for your home? Ask an Interior Designer! Cathy Phillips, opens her little black book to reveal her favourite stores in Shepherds Bush and North Kensington.
Often considered poor relations to Notting Hill, Shepherds Bush and North Kensington have much to recommend them. Anyone who has a postcode of W12, W10 or NW10 will know how many diverse places there are to eat and drink. But did you know there are hidden interiors gems, too?
Once hidden away upstairs in the West 12 shopping centre but now much expanded, lies Petit Miracles Interiors, a stunning place for upcycled, repurposed furniture and a charitable enterprise. Elisicia and her team of local trainees revitalise and sell beautiful hand restored
furniture. They take commissions too; so, if you have a piece of furniture in need of a new lease of life, do pop in with a photo and have a chat. I support these guys and would be thrilled if you did too.
Now cross over the road to the retail megalith Westfield which, you may be surprised to know, is not all clothes, clothes, clothes – here you will find a branch of Zara Home (perfect for cushions, bedlinen, tableware and lovely slippers).
Also in Westfield, www.dwell.co.uk – shop judiciously here, maybe avoiding the novelty pieces but picking classic modern sofas, dining chairs and coffee tables in good, neutral palettes. And Georg Jensen (dangerous if you like sleek, modern curved silverware, like I do!).
Despite the gentrification of Portobello, cosmopolitan North Kensington holds its own with quirky individual shops, bars and cafés. First take a stroll down Golborne Road to Bazar Antiques, if you like shabby-chic French furniture, or Les Couilles de Chien for highly unusual and extraordinary items.
Further down you’ll find Fez, specialising in high quality, handmade Moroccan products, and there are a few more vintage bric-a-brac, artefacts and homeware shops that are also worth a look.
Then head up to the Harrow Road for my favourite, Retrouvious, where you will find reclaimed floors, kitchen sinks, industrial furniture, crazy lighting and much more. While you are up here, have a look in Gallery A2, a fossil shop like no other, with meteorites, crystals and minerals which are fantastic as ornaments, paperweights or door stops.
