A little bit of Cathy Phillips-ness in west London has spread overseas again, with one of my home office designs being featured on Houzz. In Swedish! It’s a real honour as I’m a huge fan of this world-leading interiors portal, as well as Scandinavian design. I think this accolade highlights William Morris’s words: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
I’d also add, try to have things in your home that combine both good looks and great functionality. Which I think this space-saving, stylish compact home office achieves perfectly!
As an interior designer my role is largely about problem solving. I don’t just make interior spaces more attractive, I make them more effective.
The brief for this home office was part of a bespoke interior design project by Cathy Phillips & Co for an apartment in West London. The challenge was to create a multi-functional room for relaxing, watching TV, dining and working from home. So, we created the workspace in a cupboard so it could be folded and closed away.
I’m thinking about doing something similar for an artist client. Perhaps fitting an easel and space for materials behind folding doors, so she can paint when she wants to without the expense of a separate studio.
Would you love a multi-functional space that works beautifully for you?
