There are many interior designers and interior design companies in London, and they all have different ways of working. So how do you choose the right one for your project? Here are my five steps to finding your perfect match.
Look out the designer’s portfolio
An interior design portfolio will give you an overview of a designer’s style and what they do. You may also find you are drawn to a particular project they have completed. Bear in mind that an interior designer’s portfolio is usually more extensive than the one on their website, as many clients wish to keep their privacy. Read their case studies too to find out more about the briefs and solutions they came up with. This way you can see if they if have completed a project similar to yours.
Read their reviews
Find out if the interior designer has won any awards or accolades and read what their clients have to say about them. You can read some my testimonials here.
Arrange a face-to-face meeting
If the designer is flexible in terms of meeting you at a time that suits you, this will be a first good sign. When you meet you will be able to explain in detail about your project and what you want to achieve. A good interior designer or interior design company will listen to you, then ask you questions about you and your home you might not have considered. They will also be keen to meet others in your household who use the space and get their opinion too.
At this initial meeting, allow time for the designer to wander around the space unaccompanied and to take photos, so they have references to take away with them
Can they work to your budget and timeline?
Be sure to specify exactly what you would like the interior designer to provide costs for. Is it for a design only project or a full design and project management service? And if you have a budget, don’t be shy about revealing it. Everyone has limits, so be clear what your budget is. Also, find out how much time your bespoke project would require. The interior designer may not be able to offer you exact timings before you sign anything, but you can still ask for an idea of when they’d be able to start, and how long your project would take.
Trust your instinct
Do you like them? Will you be happy having them in your home? Can you imagine working together? You’re embarking on an important interior design project so it’s vital your designer understands what you want to achieve; will turn your ideas into detailed, beautiful designs; and make the process enjoyable. If you find yourselves chatting like good friends, you’ve probably found a winner!
