A month in the life of an interior designer

There’s lots more to being an interior designer than creating fabulous-looking homes. Cathy Phillips gives a snapshot of a typical month working for her interior design business in Battersea.

Interior Design - BatterseaMy working life is incredibly varied as it encompasses so many different types of projects and places. I could be meeting new clients and preparing sketches and mood boards, or out and about finding fixtures, fittings and furnishings. Here’s a glimpse of what I’ve been doing this month (with the routine day-to-day admin omitted!)

A home refurbishment in Shepherds Bush, West London

This whole house refurbishment is nearing completion. The designs were signed off a few weeks ago and all the furniture has been ordered, including the dining table which I designed, and bespoke soft furnishings.

Last week, I held a site meeting to brief the decorators, carpenter and bathroom fitter. I also spent a few hours poring over the dining table diagrams to check every dimension before manufacture.

Now I’m off back to the house to sign off the decorating work and meet the carpenter.

The finish date is in sight! I love the final styling day and photo shoot – it’s exciting to see the rooms come to life exactly as I envisaged them. That will be next month though. These kind of whole house refurbishment projects can take three or four months from design to completion.

Back in Battersea – interior design for a kitchen

This Battersea property refurbishment is a short walk from my interior design studio and so is the kitchen supplier, hurrah! We are replacing the kitchen and making a few cosmetic changes to the rest of the apartment before the client puts it the back on the rental market. So, practicality will be key here.

Kensington, Battersea, Chelsea, where next I wonder?

Autumn is a key time for interior designers as the new season inspires people to refresh and update their homes. So, I’ve been busy meeting and chatting to prospective clients about their lifestyles and how they want to improve their homes.

Often there is no set brief or budget for an interior design project, just a feeling that the space no longer works for a growing (or shrinking) family and that the rooms are simply looking jaded.

I’m happy to chat for long enough to allow me to get a feel for the people and how they live, so that I can go off and write up a proposal and put some costs together. It’s essential to do this before the client hires me, so that we know the scope and cost of the work.

There are two new projects bubbling under this month, both of which will be enormous fun to work on. Watch this space!
